  • 1/8 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1 ounce cream cheese (cold)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla paste or extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the tangzhong by whisking water and flour over medium heat until thickened. Set aside.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Add cream, milk, egg, vanilla, and tangzhong; knead until smooth.
  3. For the filling, cream butter with sugars, then add egg and vanilla before mixing in dry ingredients.
  4. Roll out the dough into a rectangle, spread filling evenly while leaving edges clean.
  5. Sprinkle chocolate chips on top and roll into strips; cut into individual rolls.
  6. Place in a baking pan to rise before baking at 325°F until golden brown.
